Spring morning light (shungyoo)
***** Location: Japan, worldwide
***** Season: All Spring
***** Category: Season
*****************************
Explanation
Already in the Pillow Book of Sei Shonagon we read:
"Spring is the best for the morning dawn!"
akebono is the older usage, later akatsuki was used.
But AKEBONO just like that is not a kigo, but a topic for haiku. The below examples have a different kigo to go with the DAWN.
The sky gets light slowly and we can begin to distinguish things around us again.
. Sei Shōnagon 清少納言 Sei Shonagon .
spring morning light, spring dawn, shungyoo
春暁 (しゅんぎょう)
..... haru no akatsuki 春の暁(はるのあかつき)
spring dawn, haru no akebono 春の曙(はるのあけぼの)
..... shunsho 春曙(しゅんしょ)
daybreak in spring, haru no yoake
春の夜明(はるのよあけ)
.... haru no asake 春の朝明(はるのあさけ)
..........................................
spring morning, haru no asa 春の朝 はるのあさ
..... shunnchoo 春朝(しゅんちょう)
..... haru ashita 春あした(はるあした)
::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
The word DAWN, just like that, is a topic for haiku.
It is NOT an "all year kigo".
Words introduced in ALL YEAR or MISCELLANEOUS sections of a saijiki are not kigo, but all-year haiku topics.
Bill Higginson writes:
The Japanese word _kigo_ means exactly "season word" or "seasonal word", as some would have it. In any case, it does not make sense to use a nonseasonal word or topic in a haiku and call it a "kigo". Rather, one could refer to it as a "topic" or, perhaps, as a "keyword". This last expression, "keyword", has actually been taken up by some Japanese haiku people to refer to exactly this kind of topic, a word or phrase that one might understand as linking a haiku to other haiku on the same topic, but one that has no seasonal meaning. (You might notice that I also use "keyword" to refer to the nonseasonal entries at the beginning of the saijiki index, as well.)
. NO to all season kigo, all year kigo

:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
Acute viral nasopharyngitis, or acute coryza, usually known as the common cold, is a highly contagious, viral infectious disease of the upper respiratory system, primarily caused by picornaviruses or coronaviruses.
Common symptoms are sore throat, runny nose, nasal congestion, sneezing and cough; sometimes accompanied by 'pink eye', muscle aches, fatigue, malaise, headaches, muscle weakness, and/or loss of appetite. Fever and extreme exhaustion are more usual in influenza. The symptoms of a cold usually resolve after about one week, but can last up to 14 days.
Symptoms may be more severe in infants and young children. Although the disease is generally mild and self-limiting, patients with common colds often seek professional medical help, use over-the-counter drugs, and may miss school or work days. The annual cumulative societal cost of the common cold in developed countries is considerable in terms of money spent on remedies, and hours of work lost.

Shinji Ogawa believes that ochita ("dropped") means, in this context, "cured." On the first morning of autumn, Issa sees a fever-curing kind of sky. The editors of Issa zenshu^ note that okori is the mosquito-borne disease of malaria (Nagano: Shinano Mainichi Shimbunsha, 1976-79) 4.62, which supports Shinji's interpretation: the chilly autumn weather will put an end to summer's disease-spreading mosquitoes. French translator Jean Cholley notes that after Issa's fever broke, he had a dream in which he saw his dead daughter Sato; 245-46, note 124.

Atakemaru 安宅丸 Cruize Ship of the Shogun
- quote -
In the Edo period, many feudal lords in the Kyushu region are said to have sailed the Seto Inland Sea with 30 to 40 ships to and from the area around the current Yodo River in Osaka for Sankin Kotai (alternate attendance). Ships used by these lords on these occasions are called "Gozabune." These Gozabune ships with dynamic and gorgeous interior and exterior decorations were used as a private luxury liner by feudal lords.
One of our ships was renamed "Atakemaru" as a replication of a Gozabune boat in the Heisei era to offer luxurious cruising with a traditional feel to customers mainly from Tokyo (Kanto region) in the Tokyo Port.

mi ni shimu ya naki tsuma ni kushi o neya ni fumu
The piercing chill I feel:
My dead wife's comb, in our bedroom,
Under my heel.
Haiku Translation - Piercing Chill, 2005
quote
piercingly cold
stepping on my dead wife's comb
in the bedroom
The opening phrase, mini ni shimu (literally, to penetrate the body), is an autumn phrase that suggests the chill and sense of loneliness that sinks into the body with the arrival of the autumn cold and that here also functions as a metaphor of the poet's feelings following the death of his wife. The poem generates a novelistic scene of the widower, some time after his wife's funeral, accidentally stepping on a comb in the autumn dark, as he is about to go to bed alone. The standard interpretation is that the snapping of the comb in the bedroom brings back memories of their relationship and has erotic overtones.
But this is not about direct or personal experience. The fact is that Buson (1706-83) composed this while his wife was alive. Indeed Buson's wife Tomo outlived him by 31 years.

身にしむや亡妻の櫛を閨に踏
mi ni shimu ya naki tsuma ni kushi o neya ni fumu

Sky (sora, ten)
***** Location: Japan, worldwide
***** Season: Various, see below
***** Category: Heaven

Explanation
The word SKY (SORA or TEN) just like that (空, 天) is not a kigo in Japan.
But since the SKY is with us day and night throughout the year, there are many kigo connected with it.
blue sky is also not a kigo, but blue sky in winter is one, see below.
The original meaning of SORA comes from SORU 反る, turn outward, upward, inside out.
This shows the great interest of the Japanese people for the sky and weather patterns.
Let us go through the seasons.

WINTER
The winter sky in Japan differs on the side of the Japan Sea, where it snows a lot and the Pacific side, where it is usually fine and clear. So the outlook on the sky depends very much on the change of the seasonal wind direction. The high pressure (with cold air) from the North moves down toward the low pressur in the South.
In winter the clear sky of the Pacific side lets us see Mount Fuji in all its splendor, whereas the side of the Sea of Japan is all covered in white and silver.

This autumn hokku is from the last day of the 9th month (October 23) in 1813, the year Issa moved back to his hometown. At the time Issa wrote the hokku he was staying at a hot springs spa in Yudanaka run by one of his students. This day is also the last day of lunar fall, and Issa is telling the butterflies and dragonflies that tomorrow will be the first day of winter. Perhaps the weather is still warm, and he thinks the butterflies and dragonflies aren't aware of the fact that winter is so near. Issa knows well that mature dragonflies, at least those that aren't eaten by other species, live only about a month, which is also the life span of small butterflies, so it isn't winter which kills off either species.
It's simply that larvae don't grow into new mature butterflies and dragonflies during winter. On the other hand, some larger butterflies survive the winter by hibernating in protected places like sheds and holes in trees. So perhaps Issa is telling the insects that they'll all soon have to say goodbye until the larger butterflies wake in the spring and new butterflies and dragonflies appear out of the larva that will survive the winter. Perhaps he's telling some of his airborne friends,
"Hey (zo yo), I'm really going to miss you!"
Winter sky also seems to refer to the emptiness Issa knows he'll feel without these small friends.

Lyrid meteor shower こと座流星群
The Lyrids
are a strong meteor shower lasting from April 16 to April 26[1] each year. The radiant of the meteor shower is located in the constellation Lyra, peaking at April 22—hence they are also called the Alpha Lyrids or April Lyrids. The source of the meteor shower is the periodic Comet C/1861 G1 Thatcher. The Lyrids have been observed for the past 2600 years.

The word STAR just like that (hoshi 星) is not a kigo in Japan.
But since the stars are with us almost every night throughout the year, there are many words connected with it.
