SAIJIKI - NEW YEAR

SEASON

:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

The New Year in Haiku lasts from January 1 to 15.

Shoogatsu used to co-incide with the first month of spring in the old lunar calendar, from the new moon to the full moon on the 15.
Therefore it was also the first month of spring in the old system.
Many kigo of this "early spring / new year / January as late winter" time bracket need to be checked carefully.
When the new saijiki were compiled according to the solar calendar, a fifth season, the NEW YEAR was introduced to avoid these complications. Many of the preparations for the New Year, done in December, are also problematic with respect to the season.

SAIJIKI - NEW YEAR

HUMANITY

:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

quote
Andrew Maerkle, Spring Exhibitions
Japan Times Feb. 2010
Seasons play an important role in Japanese culture, which has long celebrated the appreciation of ephemeral beauty as a reflection of life itself. One of the most important seasons in Japan is New Year's, a time for families to gather and celebrate with several days of elaborate feasts. Traditionally, this holiday fell between late January and mid-February and led directly into spring, until Japan adopted the Gregorian calendar in 1873.
Vestiges of this tradition, however, remain apparent in salutations such as "new spring" (shinshun) and "welcome spring" (geishun), somewhat incongruous as they are now written on New Year's cards sent in mid-winter.

The Asian Lunar Calendar and Ceremonies

A lunar month started with no-moon, had the full moon on the 15th and 28 days to go.
The first lunar month of a year started the round of 12 months.
With the calendar reform in Japan, things changed, making the life of a haiku poet more difficult.

A new saijiki category of "New Year" has been introduced to cover the problems arising from this change of calendars.
Before changing to the Gregorian calendar, there were only the four seasons in the saijiki.

Please read the details here:

. The Asian Lunar Calendar and the
changing Dates of Japanese Ceremonies

:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

新年 SHIN-NEN Shinnen NEW YEAR

The New Year is the most important time of life in Japan.
Many customs and ceremonies are related to it.
The season lasts from the first day of the New Year to about January 15th, the night of the full moon, the "Small New Year (koshoogatsu 小正月)" according to the Asian Lunar Calendar.
Some saijiki list these ceremonies in the spring season.
